A 16-year-old boy has died in a local hospital the day after he was involved in a single-car crash near Kingstree, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.

Eric D. Pendergrass of Kingstree died Sunday afternoon, Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight said.

The boy was the passenger of a 17-year-old girl traveling south on Gause Town Road at 4:15 p.m. Saturday when the driver lost control of her car at a curve in the road, Brouthers said. The vehicle then struck several mailboxes and a tree, he said.

The girl was treated at a local hospital and released, Brouthers said.

No charges have been filed so far in connection with the crash, he said.
