Horry County leaders are concerned about the county's economy.
Thursday, at an administrative committee meeting, county administrator Danny Knight said his staff would likely recommend property tax increases for next year's budget.
Horry County Public Information Officer Lisa Bourcier told News13 most of the county's money comes from property taxes and building permits.
“Building permits have been down and so the revenues are not coming in so we're really going to have to crunch the number and see where we come in at and really look at essential services, what's essential and what's not,” Bourcier said.
County Council would have to approve any tax increase.
Council chairman Liz Gilland said they will make it through the end of the year, but it won't be easy.
“I'm worried because how do you keep all you employees that you bulked up because times were fat and we needed a lot of people, and how do you continue running things well without raising taxes which we don't want to do so it'll be watching every nickel but we'll do the best we can,” Gilland said.
Bourcier said while they have started the budget process, it will be seven months before a budget is passed.
