Stroke and osteoporosis screening coming to Hartsville Dec. 4
COLUMBIA — Residents living in and around the Hartsville, community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening which checks for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for stroke.
Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of preventive health screenings, will be at the West Hartsville Baptist Church on Dec. 4. The site is located at 1003 W. Carolina Ave. in Hartsville. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.
For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call (800) 697-9721 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com. Pre-registration is required.
A stroke, also known as a “brain attack,” is ranked as the third leading cause of death in the United States and often occurs without warning. In fact, four out of five people who suffer a stroke have no apparent warning signs prior to the stroke. The good news is that with early detection, 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.
Screenings are painless, accurate and affordable. They help identify potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women.
Register for a Wellness Package with Heart Rhythm for $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. For interested residents, finger-stick blood tests and liver enzyme screenings are also available.

‘Trees of Celebration’ accepting donations

The holiday season is a particularly appropriate time to remember both our departed loved ones as well as those who are currently special in our lives. Each year, Hospice of Chesterfield County’s “Trees of Celebration” has been enthusiastically supported by the community. Last year’s “Trees of Celebration” had over 1,800 bright white lights — each serving to honor or remember someone special.
Again this year, Hospice of Chesterfield County is sponsoring the “Trees of Celebration.” Trees on the lawn of the Hospice Building in Chesterfield, will again glow with the memorials and honorariums submitted by family and friends who make a $10 contribution to Hospice of Chesterfield County for each named light.
On Dec. 7, at 4:30 p.m., there will be a lighting ceremony at the Hospice Building, located at 700 West Blvd. in Chesterfield, with the lights being illuminated and remaining lit through Dec. 30. The names of those being remembered or honored will be placed on each light and will be read during the ceremony. Donations must be received by Dec. 2 to be included in the ceremony (donations will be accepted throughout December).
Brochures detailing donation information will be mailed in the coming weeks and will be available at the Hospice of Chesterfield County offices in Chesterfield and Cheraw (160 Second St.). Acknowledgements will be mailed beginning Nov. 26.
“As with all tax-deductible contributions to Hospice of Chesterfield County, the funds derived from the ‘Trees of Celebration’ help to support our special kind of caring in the community,” Community Relations/Development Coordinator Cindy Beard said. “We are looking forward to repeating this radiant and meaningful way of honoring or remembering loved ones during the holiday season.”
For more information contact Beard at 623-5526 or 800-572-9322.
