Newly elected Mayor of Mullins, Pam T. Lee, was sworn-in by City Attorney Bob Corley before this past week’s City Council meeting, along with re-elected council members Terry D. Davis, Daniel Wayne Collins and Terry B. Strickland.
The ceremony was the first of its kind, as the City of Mullins elected its first female mayor. The city was incorporated in 1872.
“I’m ready,” Lee said, adding that she has been on the fast track to learn as much as possible. “The support has been great. I don’t even know how many phone calls I’ve received.” More than 30 people came to City Hall to witness the event, including her mother and husband Shawn. “The turnout tonight is great. You can tell people are behind her 100 percent,” Shawn said. Council members also got a visit from members of Girl Scout Troop 107.
In other business, council approved a resolution of award regarding a lease purchase of a fire truck. City Administrator Pete Rogers said the city asked for a 10-year fixed rate in the bid request. Council approved his recommendation to accept the low bid from BB&T at 4.11 percent.
In compliance with a Federal Trade Commission regulation, Council adopted a Red Flag Resolution, which means the city will be taking measures to prevent identity theft. Because the city holds consumer accounts for utilities, they have to develop and implement a written identity theft program to be in compliance with the FTC regulation. Strickland, Mayor pro tem, read the resolution to the council.
Council introduced an ordinance to amend “ordinance number 98-304 flood damage prevention ordinance” because of changes in federal regulations.
During reports, Council member Jo Sanders reported sales at the South Carolina Tobacco Museum gift shop have picked up and Assistant City Administrator Kenny Johnson announced that recreation basketball registration is underway.
Also, he said, the 12 and Under City All-Star Football team advanced into the second round of a tournament event at Freedom Florence recently.
Johnson reported that miscellaneous water line projects are 95 percent complete. Rogers informed council that Mullins, Marion and county officials have reached an agreement in principle allow the magistrate judge to preside over weekend court cases.
Mullins Police Chief Russell Bass reported several arrests have been made in connection to burglaries, adding that officers are preparing for the holiday season. Bass said he hopes that in the months to come the department can receive assistance to pay for overtime and patrol cars.
