Coward Police Chief Kevin Miller said he suffered injuries when he collided with a truck while he was running after a peeping Tom suspect who was leaving the scene on a bicycle.
Miller suffered several injuries but was released from a local hospital Friday night.
The incident happened about 3:45 p.m. Friday when a Coward resident called police and said a man was peeping in her window, Miller said.
Miller said he got a description of the suspect and located him in a neighbor’s yard. The suspect was intoxicated, so Miller said he asked him to leave the yard.
The suspect got on his bike and pedaled away from the scene, but continued shouting profanities, Miller said.
The chief said he told the suspect to stop the bike and that he was placing him under arrest for disorderly conduct, but the suspect pedaled on. The bicycle hit a truck and Miller, who was running after the suspect, also hit the truck.
Miller said he blacked out for a few moments but still manage to arrest the suspect, 44-year-old Thomas Jefferson McFadden of 3005 Lamar Lane in Scranton.
“I lost consciousness, but I still had enough in me to tame him,” Miller said.
A Florence County sheriff’s deputy who happened to be riding past the scene took McFadden to the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham, Miller said.
Miller said he drove himself to the hospital after the crash because he doesn’t like ambulances.
“I hate ambulance rides, I hate the feeling of it,” he said.
Meanwhile, McFadden remains in custody at the jail in Effingham awaiting a bond hearing.
He is charged with resisting arrest, publicly disorder conduct, peeping Tom and entering premises after warning or refusing to leave on request, booking reports show.
