A Myrtle Beach Seahawk’s assistant football coach died in a car crash late Thursday night.

Myrtle Beach High School principal Nona Kerr tells News13 Greg Skipper, 51, died about a half mile from his house, off of Highway 378 in Conway.

She says grief counselors are at the school Friday for any athletes and students who may need their help.

Kerr says they will play their home football game against Airport High School Friday night, per the family’s request.

Rick Kullnat, Skipper’s brother-in-law says, “He wouldn’t want anything that would cause them to lose more focus than what was absolutely necessary so I mean he was for the team, that what he would want.”

Kerr says they will have a moment of silence at the beginning of the game to remember Skipper.

On Saturday, November 15, his family says there will be a viewing at Goldfinch's Funeral Home in Conway from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

His family also says his funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Bethany Bible Chapel in Conway.

Skipper leaves behind two sons, two sisters, and an elderly father who he was living with and taking care of.

Bryan Skipper, one of his sons says, “I’m just kind of shocked, he’s kind of one of those guys you think is going to be around pretty much all the time, you know a big, loud guy and took over a room and he always had a joke or you know he wanted to pick on somebody, playfully, you know he was always a good bit of fun to be around, so it’s kind of shocking that I can’t pick-up the phone and talk to him.” Matt Skipper, another son, says he will miss going to the gym with his dad and the competition they shared.

Skipper had been an assistant football coach at MBHS for a combination of 30 years, dating back to when Doug Shaw was the head coach.

He also coached the offensive line at Socastee High School.

Skipper’s family says they will continue to go to games at Myrtle Beach High School because Coach Skipper loved his team and that’s what he would’ve wanted.
