MULLINS — From Barack Obama in Washington down to Pam Lee in Mullins, the November 2008 election is making history.
“I can’t imagine how he felt the next morning after the election, but I know how I felt,” Lee said. “It’s new. I mean it’s exciting, you know?”
On Thursday night, Lee was sworn in at Mullins City Hall as the city's first female mayor.
On Nov. 4, Lee defeated the incumbent mayor Kenneth McDonald by 132 votes.
“I was really surprised. I thought maybe I would be close to him,” Lee said. “I actually wasn’t even sure that I’d win. I just thought if I could at least win by one vote, you know, it would be great.”
Lee’s been serving the Mullins community for the past 36 years as the owner of the Pizza Shak.
“We’re hometown people. I’m pretty sure I know everybody and they know me, so my door’s always open,” she said.
The Mullins native said she hopes to bring more jobs and industry to Mullins along with a solution to the homelessness issue.
“I just really want to do a really good job,” she said. “If I can make one major change during the four years, then I think I’ve done what I set out to do.”
Just like the newly-elected president, Lee said her election platform — and now, ultimate goal — is change.
