A Latta man was arrested Wednesday amid accusations he passed thousands of dollars in counterfeit checks, Florence Police Lt. James Rodgers said.

Carlton Davis Driggers, 34, of 612 Shillow Court is charged with three counts of forgery-value $5,000 or more, larceny and obtaining signatures or property under false pretenses, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.

The first incident happened Sept. 19 when the suspect gave a victim a counterfeit check to pay a bill, Rodgers said. On Sept. 22, investigators said, he gave a bogus check to a local bank as payment on a loan.

On Sept. 25 the suspect gave someone he owed money three counterfeit checks totaling more than $11,000. That person went into a local credit union and cashed the checks, Rodgers said.

Driggers remains in custody at the jail in Effingham. Bond information wasn’t available.
