A 23 year-old Darlington man is in custody for 14 different thefts.

Wednesday afternoon Cleveland McNeal went before a judge on those charges.

Authorities said he mainly stole items out of people's cars throughout the city that were left unlocked and unattended.

Police said it was no place in particular, but the victim's had one thing in common.

"Basically he'll go up, check the door if the door's open he'll go inside and rifle the contents," Capt. Danny Watson, Darlington Police Department said.

One out of the 14 thefts police said McNeal committed was a victim of circumstance, and if you ask Frank McCain he'll say he was a victim of having a good heart.

"I loaned it to him. He came to me on a sympathy side and said Mr. Frank let me ride your bicycle I need to get my mom some medicine," McCain, theft victim said.

McCain said his bike was returned ten hours later, but was missing an important piece.

"When he brought it back the handle bars were dropped down. There was no basket. At quarter till three in the morning," McCain said.

The bike is McCain's primary form of transportation and the basket attached is his main storage space.

A few days later McCain had the opportunity to address the man police said took the bike.

"That judge asked me if there was anything I wanted to say to him. I said one thing I want my basket get my basket back, and they got it for me," McCain said.

McCain said there is one thing he gained and that's a new outlook on life.

"I try to help everybody, to try to be good to everybody, but I see now-a-days you can't be good to everyone," McCain said.

Police said that the thefts occurred over a two month period and McNeal could serve 30 days for each of this petit larceny charges.

Darlington Police also said with today's economy coupled with the holiday shopping season, folks need to be especially careful in parking lot areas.
