Estalene C. Fowler
Estalene Cartrette Fowler, 78, widow of William Deary Fowler, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008 in her home after an illness. She was born on June 23, 1930 in Columbus County, N.C., a daughter of the late William Albert Cartrette and the late Effie Register Cartrette. Mrs. Fowler was a homemaker.
Surviving Mrs. Fowler are four sons, Deary Fowler Jr. of Clarendon, N.C., Charles Ray Fowler of Whiteville, N.C., Johnny Fowler of Mullins and Garland Fowler of Mullins; three daughters, Patsy Fowler of Mullins, Barbara Hinson of Mullins and Jimmie Lou Vause of Elizabethtown, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ester Gerald and Josephine Cartrette both of Chadbourn, N.C.; and two brothers, Earl Cartrette and Wesley Cartrette both of Chadbourn, N.C. She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Buddy Williams, the Rev. Willie Gillard and Dr. Kenneth Orbeck officiating.

Amari Norman
Amari Norman, two months old, died on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 in a Charleston hospital. He was the son of Ronneshia Norman and Jarred Wright. A graveside service was on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 at the Centerville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Doretha Nichols
Doretha “Cookie” Nichols, 43, died on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 in a Florence hospital. She was the daughter of the late Leona Nichols and Dozier Abrams and the sister of Mary Pee, Linda Avant of Fayetteville, N.C., Joseph Nichols of Paterson, N.J., and James Nichols of Pittsburg, Penn.
She attended Greater Fork Chapel AME Church of Spring Branch. A funeral was on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, with the Rev. Joseph O. Bennett officiating. Interment was at Centerville Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her son, Shawnta, of Goldsboro, N.C.; her daughter, Yolinda; and a special friend, Johnny Gene Cooper.


Willie Leonard
Willie “Son” Leonard, 79, died on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 in his home. He was the son of the late Alonza and Margaret Reaves Leonard. He was educated in Marion County and relocated to Florida at an early age, returning to Marion after his retirement.
A funeral was on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2008 at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, with Elder Michael Fogan officiating. Interment was at Green Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Leonard is survived by his sisters, Annie Bristow, Louise Lennon and Lizzie Ruth Lawson of Jupiter, Fla.; and his brother, Johnny Ellison of Rains.

Harriet Myers
Harriet Smith Myers, 51, died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 in her home. A funeral was on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at Greater Singletary AME Church in Wahee, with the Rev. Henry J. Murray, pastor, officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late Harold and Johnnie Mae Smith, and the wife of Kenneth Myers. She worked for Russell Stover Candies for over 15 years and attended Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She was the sister of Ellen Davis of Norfolk, Va., Gloria Garner of Aynor and Harold Smith. She is survived by her sons, Chester and Jermaine; and special friends Angela Gause, Collene Samuels, Flora Davis, Alex Paige and Clifton and Joe Israel, both of Aynor.

Ruth Gillians
Ruth Juanita Gillians, 73, died on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Ella Mae Porter. At an early age, she joined Spring Branch Baptist Church in Spring Branch, where her funeral was conducted on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, with the Rev. Sam M. Brantley, pastor, officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.
She was the widow of Frank Gillians Sr., and the mother of the late Alden Porter. She is survived by her children, Frank Gillians of Latta, Ruthie Burke of Rochester, N.Y., Mary Gillians and Doris Page of Latta.

James Cameron
James “Bubba” Cameron was born on May 7, 1928 in Lake City to the late Joseph and Maude Daniels Cameron. He was the husband of Verlene Cameron and brother of Joseph of Camerontown, George, Rickie Daniels of Petersburg, Va., Jettie Baker of Camerontown, Jane Washington of Fayetteville, N.C., Frankie Cameron of Houston, Harrie Graham of Englewood, N.J., and Maltonia Barr of Woodbridge, Va.
A funeral was conducted in Hacksensack, N.J., at Canaan Baptist Church on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, with the Rev. Barry Graham officiating. A second funeral was on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008 at Bethel AME Church in the Camerontown section of Lake City, also officiated by the Rev. Barry Graham. Interment was at Sandhill Cemetery of Camerontown.
He is survived by his children, Curdell Graham of Florida, Clarence of Richmond, Va., Geroad and Rodney, Lavetta of Newport News, Va., and Sherry Berry of Humble, Texas.

Geneva Williams
Geneva Ellerbe Williams, 59, died on Wednesday, Oct. 29 , 2008 in the Marion County Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late James and Ethel Brown Ellerbe and the wife of Reginald Williams.
A 1968 graduate of Johnakin High School, she was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Penderboro, where a funeral was conducted on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008. The Rev. A.C. Robinson, pastor, offered words of comfort, and interment was at Devotion Gardens.
She was active at Pleasant Grove, serving in the Missionary Ministry, Clerk of the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class, and past Advisor of the Youth Choir. She was also active with the Little Pee Dee Women’s Missionaries and worked at Russell Stover Candies for over 30 years. She was employed by Francis Marion University for the past nine years.
She is survived by her daughters, Denovia Blackwell and Reggina Yandila of Chillicothe, Ohio; her sisters, Martha Pee, Sarah Crosland and Mary Ellerbe and Christine Rowland of Bellglade, Fla.; and by special friends, Betty Hughes, Linda Bell, Elsie Williamson and Janell Alexander.

Louise Godbold
Louise P. Godbold, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, in McLeod Hospice House after and extended illness. The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 31, at Richardson Funeral Home from 6 – 8 p.m. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, followed by burial in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Godbold was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Junius Adger Price and Lorena Davis Price. She is also predeceased by her husband, Marion H. Godbold, brothers, Thomas Adger Price and Junius C. Price, sisters, Lilllie Mae Hinds, and Bessie P. Shaw. Mrs. Godbold was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was retired from Francis Marion University.
Survivors are a daughter, Alice B. Elvington and her husband, Tony C. Elvington of Marion, a sister Doris P. Bailey of Florence, and a granddaughter, Ashley L. Elvington of Marion.
Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 3903 West Hwy. 76, Marion, S.C. 29571.

Earl Proctor
Earl Proctor, 95, of Fork died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, in Marion County Medical Center. Mr. Proctor was born on June 7, 1913 in Dillon County, a son of the late Fred and Minnie Brogdon Proctor.
His wife, Margaret Baker Proctor; a daughter, Judy P. Baggett; two brothers, Ben Proctor and Odell Proctor; and one sister, Ethel Lee Proctor Gibbs, predeceased Mr. Proctor. He was a retired farmer and a member of Hopewell Methodist Church.
Mr. Proctor is survived by two sons, Ronnie Proctor (Carolyn) of Fork and Freddie Proctor (Beverly) of Mullins; one daughter, Jean P. Anderson (David) of Fork; a brother, Dewey Proctor (Evelyn) of Mullins; nine grandchildren, Cindy (Mike) Wood, Robbie (Susan) Anderson, Jason (Erika) Anderson, Tammy Baggett, Sharon Baggett, Rhonda (Dee) Page, Matthew Proctor, Chris (Amanda) Proctor, and Cameron Proctor; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Meares Funeral Home, Mullins. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Dillon, with the Rev. Ron Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Methodist Church, 4132 Arena Court, Mullins, 29574.

Nadine W. Richardson
Nadine W. Richardson, 72, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an extended illness. A graveside service was at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 in Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Richardson was born in Britton’s Neck, a daughter of the late Miley and Sadie Cribb Woodberry. Her sisters, Ethel Sawyer and Carrie Hooks, and a granddaughter, Casey Lynn Richardson, predeceased her. Mrs. Richardson was a homemaker, wife and mother and was a member of McMillan Baptist Church and Nebo Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Morris L. Richardson; sons, Mitchell Richardson and his wife Sandy, Mike Richardson and his wife Cynthia, David Richardson and his wife Carol Rae, Sam Richardson and his wife Carol, Randy Richardson and his wife Wanda; a brother, Liston Woodberry and his wife Julia of Florence; sisters, Jay Atkinson and her husband Benny of Britton’s Neck and Anne Lovell of Liberty; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Juanita Carter Martin
Juanita “Nita” Johnson Carter Martin died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, in her home. She was born on Oct. 27, 1933 to the late James Olan and Fannie Lewis Johnson of Marion. She was predeceased by her first husband of 27 years, Harry C. Carter Sr., her second husband of 16 years, William E. Martin Sr.; a son, Franklin D. “Frankie” Carter; three sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Martin is survived by a son, Harry C. Carter Jr. and his wife Kathy of Hilton Head Island; a sister, Eva Floyd of North Carolina; two step-sons, William “Billy” Martin Jr. and his wife Crystal of Concord, N.C., and Guy Martin and his wife Tracy of Fort Mill; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was especially close to and her grandson Eric Garris and his family of Marion.
Mrs. Martin was an active member of Mullins First Baptist Church and the Senior Saints Choir.
Services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 in Mullins First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Kirkland officiating. Burial followed at Palmetto Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marion. Memorials may be made to Mullins First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 443 Mullins, 29574.

John Michael Adkins
John Michael Adkins, 46, husband of Theresa Mason Adkins, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 22, 2962 in Logan County, W.Va., a son of Curtis C. and Jeanette Ferrell Adkins. He was an Assistance Manager for Sav-Way stores and a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the 82nd Airborne.
Surviving Mr. Adkins, in addition to his wife, and parents of Nichols, are two sons, John Michael Adkins Jr. of Texas, Nolan M.C. Adkins of Nichols; six daughters, Carolyn Fitzwater, Tabitha Adkins and Teresa Adkins, all of Texas, and Victoria D.R. Adkins, Savanna S.L. Adkins and Vivian J. M. Adkins all of Nichols; a brother, Curtis Adkins Jr. of South Carolina; and three sisters, Tina Reed of Minnesota, Helen Ling of South Carolina and Margie McCullen of North Carolina.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the Florence National Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Garris officiating. The

Edward P. Pittman
Edward P. Pittman, 89, of Charlotte died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008 in his home. A native of Horry County, Mr. Pittman was born to the late Walter Pittman and Lelia Jenrette Pittman on Aug. 12, 1919. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 101st Airborne.
Mr. Pittman was a salesman for Shift and Company in Charlotte and retired from the North Carolina Commission of the Blind. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the Hickory Grove Lions Club. Mr. Pittman was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Alexander Pittman.
Mr. Pittman is survived by his sons, James W. Pittman and David E. Pittman both of Charlotte; a brother, Clifford Pittman of Conway; step-brothers, Bobby, Buddy and Carroll Richardson.
The funeral was at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5 in St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 2019 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte with the Rev. Richard Clough officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Elizabeth H. “Bettie” Wallace
Elizabeth Hall “Bettie” Wallace, 83, widow of Robert B. “Brownie” Wallace, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 in McLeod Hospice House, Florence. She was born in Wilmington, N.C., a daughter of the late A.D. and Grace Powell Hall. She attended Mars Hill College and was a member of Marion Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Daphne Garden Club.
Surviving her are her daughter, Rosanne Wallace Black and her husband Greg Black of Myrtle Beach; her son, Robert B. Wallace Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Musselwhite Wallace of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Black of Chicago, Wallace Black of Columbia, Caroline Black of Columbia, Elizabeth Wallace and Rollins Wallace, both of Raleigh, N.C.; and a sister, Rachel Hall Stone (Raymond) of Kittrell, N.C.
Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Rose Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Daniel Inabinet officiating. Memorials may be made to the Marion Baptist Church Organ Fund, 106 S. Main St., Marion, 29571 or to McLeod Hospice House, P.O. Box 100551, Florence, 29502.

Beverly Gail Smith Roberts
Beverly Gail Smith Roberts, 58, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center. She was born March 4, 1950 in New Jersey, a daughter of Ann Lukaswitz Smith and the late Raymond Smith. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and an avid artist and photographer. She was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving are her daughter Holly Thompson and her husband David of Marion; her mother, Ann Lukaswitz Smith of Conway; three grandchildren, E. Wayne Allen, Raeanna Thompson and Trey Thompson and his wife Becky; a great-grandchild, Allison Thompson; a sister, Barbara Deremer and her husband Clay of Mt. Pleasant; a nephew, David Deremer and his wife Stacy of Copper Hill, Va.; and a niece, Jennifer Deremer of Mt. Pleasant.
Services were at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Burial followed in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
