A 27-year-old Florida man has been charged in connection with a high-speed chase and traffic crash that killed a 17-year-old passenger.
Shakene Amefika Richberg was arrested Saturday and charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury, felony driving under the influence resulting in death, failure to stop for a blue light resulting in death and second or subsequent offense possession of one ounce or less of marijuana.
The crash happened Oct. 29 at the Douglas Street Extension at Ashby Road in Florence.
Ronnie Aaron Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:41 p.m. Oct. 29 of multiple body trauma caused by the crash, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.
Matthews said the driver of a 2008 Chrysler with Florida tags carrying three passengers ran off the right side of the Douglas Street Extension.
According to S.C. Highway Patrol reports, the driver of the Chrysler ran a stop sign. When troopers tried to stop it, the driver kept going. Troopers chased the car and the driver drove into a tree.
Kelly was a passenger on the right side of the car, Matthews said.
The Highway Patrol and Florence County sheriff’s deputies investigated the crash.
Bond was denied for Richberg's release during a hearing Tuesday.
