Members of the Horry County Elections Commission met to officially certify the results of Tuesday’s election.
The certification hearing started at 10:00 a.m. at the Government and Justice Center in Conway.
The hearing started with commission members listening to any questions, concerns, or comments about the election procedure.
Representatives from the county’s Democratic Party told committee members about several issues they knew about involving voter intimidation. In addition to their complaints, some political candidates also talked about some complaints they received. Commission members said they were not aware of many of the issues that were brought up and if they had known, they would have done something about it.
As for the certification process, committee members went 614 challenge ballots from across the county. 214 were counted as valid and 400 were not accepted. The valid votes were added to the overall number of votes.
After the results were verified, an automatic recount for the votes in Horry County council District No. 3 took place.
Public Information Officer Lisa Bourcier said Incumbent Marion Foxworth and challenger Keith VanWinkle were separated by 81 votes. Foxworth had 4,853 votes and Van Winkle had 4,772 and there were 349 write-in votes.
Bourcier said Foxworth was declared the winner.
In another closely watched race for School District No.9, there was not recount.
Incumbent Ronald Bessant and challenger David Cox were separated by 115 votes, not enough for a recount.
Bourcier said Bessant had 4,673 votes and Cox had 4,788.
All of the certified results were sent the Elections Commission in Columbia.
