FLORENCE — Florence County councilman Mitchell Kirby says he’s excited to continue serving the residents of his district after winning his fifth term on council.
Kirby, a Democrat, received 3,627 votes to defeat Republican opponent Betty Dowling, who got 2,421 votes for the District 4 seat.
“Through the campaigning and listening to the voters, I heard their needs and their requests, and I look forward to getting back to work and seeing that these things are accomplished,” Kirby said Thursday.
Dowling, a Florence School District 4 board member, couldn’t be reached for comment by press time Thursday.
Kirby thanked his supporters as well as Dowling. He congratulated Dowling for running “a good campaign” and said he looks forward to working with her.
Dowling said in a previous interview that she thinks the amount of frivolous items passed during the incumbent’s time on the council speaks volumes in a time of economic troubles.
Kirby, however, disputed Dowling’s comments and said he thinks the county council has done a great job of promoting the economic interests of the county.
Republican council members Ken Ard and Morris Anderson, who represent District 2 and 5, respectively, and Democratic councilman Johnnie Rodgers Jr., who represents District 9, also won re-election Tuesday after facing no opposition in the general election.
