Sonoco to present at
JP Morgan 3rd Annual Basics
& Industrials Conference

Sonoco, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, will speak to the investment community on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at the JP Morgan 3rd Annual Basics & Industrials Conference in New York City.
Harris E. DeLoach Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer, and Charles Hupfer, senior vice president and chief financial officer, are scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The audio presentation will be Webcast and can be accessed via the Internet at www.sonoco.com, under the “Latest News” section. Slides from the presentation will be available on the Sonoco Web site in the Investor Relations section under “Presentations.” A replay of the presentation will be available on Sonoco’s Web site beginning at noon on June 4 for a period of 90 days.

Hartsville man earns
medical degree from MUSC
CHARLESTON — Ronald Coleman Turner Jr. of Hartsville was among 643 graduates who received degrees from The Medical University of South Carolina’s six colleges during commencement excercises on May 16 in the university Horseshoe.
Turner earned the degree Doctor of Medicine. He will serve his residency at MUSC.
Turner is the son of the late Ronald C. “Ronnie” Turner Sr. and Betty Jo Turner of Hartsville. He is a graduate of Emmanuel Baptist School in Hartsville. He earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Florence-Darlington Technical College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the College of Charleston.
Kenneth W. Kizer, MD, MPH, former undersecretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and current chairman of the board of Medsphere Systems Corp., delivered the commencement address and received a Doctor of Medical Science, honoris causa.
Founded in 1824 in Charleston, The Medical University of South Carolina is the oldest medical school in the South. Today, MUSC continues the tradition of excellence in education, research and patient care.

National Council of Negro Women to meet June 17
The National Council of Negro Women will hold its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at the Darlington Library, 204 N. Main St., Darlington.
All members are asked to be present. All prospective members are encouraged to attend.

Pee Dee District of Water Environment Association to hold annual DHEC Seminar June 21
The Pee Dee District of the Water Environment Association (WEA) will hold its annual DHEC Seminar on Saturday, June 21, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Checkered Flag Club at the Darlington Raceway on Highway 151 in Darlington.
Topics for the seminar will include water standards, compliance and groundwater issues in drinking water by DHEC representatives.

Army Pvt. Jarius M. Bruce has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
Bruce is the son of Johnny and Lurie Bruce of Darlington.
The private is a 2002 graduate of Hartsville High School.
