Bye, bye happiness
Billy Williams, who lives on the 151 by pass was supposed to get an income tax refund of $11.32 from the state. Surprisingly enough, when he received the check, it was for $1,132.57. According to Williams, he wanted to send it back as quick as possible. “I’m not familiar with the law dealing with this type of thing,” he said, “but I didn’t want to end up paying interest on the money.” Williams is getting ready to mail the check to the S.C. Tax Commission.

Carolina gas leaps
Spurred by the 5-cent a gallon federal tax increase the first of April and a boost in prices by refineries to take advantage of heavier vacation travel, average gas prices in the Carolinas leaped an average of slightly more than 11 cents a gallon during the past eight weeks.
Survey results show that the average cost for a gallon of gas in the Carolinas — full service and self-service, regular and unleaded combined — is currently $1.303, compared with $1.92 shortly before Easter.
A spokesman for the Charlotte-based AAA motor club said that he “felt it doubtful” that the higher prices could be sustained due to the abundant supply of crude oil available on the world market and the “intense competition” among oil companies to retain their market shares. He added that he thought prices would begin to drop in the near future and level out beneath last year’s average prices.
