GEORGE WASHINGTON STEPHENSON
George Washington Stephenson, formally of Hartsville, died on Saturday, May 24, in Fayetteville, N.C., after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home Inc.

SALLIE JONES
Funeral services for Sallie Hodge Jones, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Bishop Marc Ensign will officiate, with burial in Society Hill LDS Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jones died Monday, May 26. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Bert and Mattie Brewington Hodge.

Surviving are her husband, Nathaniel S. Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Tina Gainey of Myrtle Beach; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Mark Sprouse of Lynchburg, Va., Judith and Michael Keeling of High Point, N.C., Cindy and Jesse Rierson of Belews Creek, N.C.; sister, Hattie King of Hartsville; stepdaughters, Jerri and Larry Miesner of Beaufort, April and Mike Havlin of Nicaragua; stepson, Nathaniel Jones Jr of Virginia Beach, Va.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons Purvis Gainey and Ronald Gainey.

MARY FRALEY
DARLINGTON — Mary Eris Fraley, 18, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at Central Baptist Church, with entombment following in Darlington County Memorial Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born April 17, 1990, in Florence County, she was a daughter of Gerald N. Fraley and Myra Cooper Fraley. Mary was a senior in school who enjoyed shopping, running and ballet. Miss Fraley attended Central Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother and father are a sister, Mia Nicole Cooper of Darlington; paternal grandmother, Eris M. Fraley of Darlington; maternal grandfather, E.J. Cooper of Darlington; her step-father Larry J. Mims of Darlington; her aunt, Sandra C. Rohrer of Lexington; her uncle, James “Bubba” E. Cooper of Darlington; Benji, Jordan and many other special cousins; her boyfriend, Dix Freeman; and special friends, Margaret, CC, Rachael and Leanna.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Furman Fraley and her maternal grandmother, Louise Cooper.

TOM HAMBERIS
DARLINGTON — Tom Gerry Hamberis, 63, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at his residence after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior, Florence, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery, Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born in Klafsion Euritania, Greece, he was a son of the late Gerasimos Hamberis and the late Efstasia Demetrious Hamberis. He served Greece in the Air Force before his moving to the United States. Mr. Hamberis worked at many local restaurants such as: 301, Eat More, Hot Dog King and Carolina Lunch/Dairy Bar, when it was located on Main Street. In 1983 he became owner and operator of Cindy’s Restaurant in Hartsville. Tom enjoyed fishing in his free time and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Alexopoulo Hamberis of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Tom and Tammi Hamberis of Hartsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Efstasia H. “Stacy” and John Bakas of Florence; two grandchildren, Thomas Jacob Hamberis, Eleni Victoria Bakas; and a sister and
brother-in-law, Basiliki and Bill Gemenis of Newport News, Va.

He was preceded in death by brothers Athansios and Rothothea Hamberis.

A Trisagion service was held at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior, 2990 S. Cashua St., Florence, SC 29501 or McLeod Hospice, PO Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502.

JESSIE ‘DICK’ DIXON
PATRICK — Jessie “Dick” Dixon, age 67, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield. Burial followed in the Palmetto Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Dixon was born on Sept. 17, 1940, in Darlington, a son of the late Brock and Idell Hicks Dixon. He was a retired carpenter and U.S. Air Force Veteran. Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of the Winery Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey L. “Hob” Dixon and Anglish Dixon.

Surviving are his companion of 15 years, Caroline O’Neal; three sons, Randy L. (Glenda) Dixon of Patrick, Jessie “Gene” (Judy) Dixon and Richard “Cotton” (Penny) Dixon, both of Chesterfield; two daughters, Missy Shaw and Ricky Griggs of Cheraw, and Rachel Medford of Patrick; one brother, Elijah (Doris) Dixon of Chesterfield; four sisters, Rachel Yarborough of McBee, Patricia Rogers of Chesapeake, Va., Ann (Max) McCormick of Cheraw and Becky Ann (Frank) Hayden of Suffolk, Va.; also eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
