A warehouse blaze in Darlington County early Tuesday morning kept firefighters from four local fire departments busy until late in the afternoon.

Units from the city of Darlington, Hartsville, Darlington County and West Florence responded to the fire at the Ahlstrom warehouse on Southborough Road at Interstate 20.

A WBTW News13 crew on the scene said firefighters worked to ventilate the building to allow heat and smoke to escape.

Scott Murdock, vice president and general manager for Ahlstrom, said in a telephone interview that there wasn’t a great deal of damage and no one was injured.

There was a small fire isolated to the rayon raw material in the warehouse, Murdock said. Company officials at the scene told Murdock the blaze had been contained, he said.

The metal shell building is located past the Florence County line near Traces Golf Course.

The 120,000-square-foot building had been part of the international conglomerate’s filtration division until it was closed in December, Murdock said.

About 25,000 square feet of the facility had been used as a warehouse for material used at the company’s Bethune plant, he said.

Murdock said no hazardous materials were stored at the facility.

Ahlstrom is a global leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of high performance fiber-based materials, according to the company’s Web site, www.ahlstrom.com.

The fire still is under investigation, said Linwood Epps, public information officer for the Darlington County Fire Department.

“It’s out,” Epps said. “We still don’t know what caused it.”

The fire didn’t result in any major traffic problems, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said.
