It’s certainly no surprise that rising gasoline and food prices are the number one concern of people in the Pee Dee.
That’s according to the first Francis Marion University/Morning News Poll taken earlier this month.
And along with that there is a major concern about how to pay for rising health care costs.
Along with that, several economic issues were among the biggest worries.
A story on the poll in the Morning News said that the gasoline/food price issue was given by 16 percent of people as their No. 1 problem.
Jobs and the economy were also high on people’s lists.
But right now while the cigarette tax increase is being debated in the General Assembly it’s worth noting what people thought about paying for health care costs.
A whopping 85 percent said they are concerned about paying for future medical costs for themselves and their families.
The House and Senate, except for a minor difference, have now voted to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 50 cents moving us from the lowest tax in the nation at only seven cents a pack.
Most of the money will be used to give health care to an estimated 80,000 parents of children already covered by Medicaid, and help at least 30,000 more workers afford insurance through three years of premium assistance, House Minority Leader Harry Ott told the Associated Press.
Some want to argue that it’s wrong to try and pay for this care with money that may not increase as the cost of the care increases.
But right now it’s much better for our state and its citizens to pay for this care saving us money in the long run from people who are costing us money because they don’t have the means to pay for their care.
