Gregory B. Askins, chairman of the Williamsburg Technical College Commission and a Hemingway attorney, recently endowed a scholarship named in memory of his father, J.P. Askins Jr.
The J.P. Askins Jr. Memorial Scholarship commemorates his legacy as a commission board member at the college. Askins was instrumental in the founding of Williamsburg Technical College.
The Askins Scholarship historically has been awarded to first-time freshmen who have demonstrated academic promise and have been recommended by a high school guidance counselor.
Previously, the scholarship was among several general scholarships provided to qualified students from the actual corpus of the donated funds.
Now as an endowed scholarship, it will provide financial assistance to qualified students paid for by the interest on the corpus of the donation.
Recipients will be Hemingway High School graduates as selected by the school’s counselors.
Gifts made payable to the Williamsburg Technical College Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, are tax-deductible.
