Police are looking for a man, as well as his two accomplices, who failed at a carjacking attempt because he couldn’t drive the manual transmission vehicle, Dillon Police Sgt. Jason Turner said.
The incident happened at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached a woman and demanded she give him her keys, Turner said.
The suspect tried to start the car, but was unsuccessful because he didn’t know he had to press the clutch and the brake, he said.
The victim started the car for the suspect after he asked her to do it for him. The victim then drove off, dragging the suspect, who was hanging on to the outside of the car, Turner said.
The suspect eventually let go and the victim was able to locate a S.C. Highway Patrol trooper.
Less than 10 minutes after that incident, two suspects tried to take another woman’s car from a gasoline station, Turner said.
A suspect walked up to the victim, told her he had a gun and threatened to shoot her brother, who was sitting in the back seat, if she didn’t cooperate, Turner said. Meanwhile, a second suspect entered the car and took the woman’s purse out of one of the seats.
The victim was able to get behind the wheel and drive off, nearly hitting the woman who took her purse, Turner said.
Police said the two incidents are connected because the suspects were driving a burgundy Mercury Mountaineer during both crimes.
The second victim was able to give a State Law Enforcement Division sketch artist a description of one of the suspects.
