FLORENCE- On Wednesday, May 21st, members of the WBTW News13 news team paid a visit to McLeod Children’s Hospital in Florence, in preparation of the upcoming Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Telethon. After a planning session, hospital leaders invited them to view a pediatric surgery, in order to develop a better understanding of the kind of work performed at the hospital.
With permission from the patient’s parent, they were able to observe the surgical repair of a child’s broken arm. News13 Anchors Nicole Boone and Rusty Ray, and Chief Meteorologist Frank Johnson along with News Director David Hart and Executive Producer Tracy Vreeland suited up in scrubs and joined the medical team inside the operating room. News13 Anchors Bob Juback and Martha Hunn watched from the observation room, and Hunn captured the whole experience through digital photography. General Manager Michael Caplan, Managing Editor Eric Walters, and Creative Services Manager Scott Lineberger also observed.
This experience was an invaluable educational opportunity in preparing for the telethon, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year locally for the treatment and research of children’s illnesses and injuries. The CMN telethon is scheduled for Saturday, May 31st, with live broadcasts from McLeod Children’s Hospital and the new Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, SC.
