Helping graduates find a job

»  Comments | Post a Comment

For thousands of college graduates flooding the job market, now's not the time for a down economy. Coastal Carolina University offers career services to graduates. Even with a slow economy, coastal reps tell us they're still able to find jobs for students. The only problem, they may not be in the field for which their degree prepared them.

Most graduating seniors worked to secure jobs earlier in the year. But many are still looking. The Coastal Carolina University Career Services Center placed more than 200 students so far this year. They told us millennials, as the current generation is known, sometimes expect corner offices starting out.
However, graduates need to look for entry-level jobs that provide needed work experience.

Mollie Fout, Director of the Career Services Center said relocation may be necessary.

“The economy doesn't seem to have impacted our students ability to find work, it may have impacted the quality of the work, or their first choice type of employment,” said Fout. But, our students at Coastal are willing to relocate to a great extent and if you're willing to relocate, then it's possible."

Fout said packaging yourself properly is the key to finding a job. Some tips to finding a job include:

Realize the job market is very competitive and aggressively go after the position you want. Fout said assertiveness is no longer enough.

Outline what qualities you can bring to a job and be prepared to explain why a company would benefit from hiring you.

Look for entry-level jobs that will teach you about your field and help you build your resume.

Do not expect a management position right away. Paying your dues is still required in nearly every field.
If you can't find something in your field, look for fields that work with yours. You can still use your degree and again, build your resume.
