DARLINGTON — Deputies are looking for a suspected gunman in a gang-related shooting that took place late Saturday night at Darlington’s American Legion building, according to a press release issued Monday by the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect has been identified by investigators but wasn’t named in the release.
The investigation indicates that the shooting was retaliatory for another gang-related incident, according to the release.
A deputy was checking the building, located on Harry Byrd Highway near Darlington, at 11:20 p.m. Saturday when he saw people running out the front and back doors and called for backup because of the large crowd. Witnesses said several men had fired shots into the crowd, striking at least four people, according to the release.
The victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment, and their injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening as most victims were shot in the lower part of their bodies, according to the release. Several shell casings found at the scene were seized as evidence.
Several people were arrested at the scene for disorderly conduct. One person was subdued with a Taser after he reportedly tried to assault a deputy, according to the release.
