Town of Olanta hires new clerk

During the Olanta town council meeting this past week, Mayor Betty Sims introduced Tara Bayse as the new town clerk. Bayse, an Olanta native started on May 5 to train for the position and Sims later said she is not exactly sure when outgoing town clerk Jean Lee will leave but thinks it will be within the next three weeks.

During the Olanta town council meeting this past week, Mayor Betty Sims introduced Tara Bayse as the new town clerk.
Bayse, an Olanta native started on May 5 to train for the position and Sims later said she is not exactly sure when outgoing town clerk Jean Lee will leave but thinks it will be within the next three weeks.
During the meeting, Sims said Lee is getting married and will move to Myrtle Beach and is happy to have Bayse join the town’s staff.
In old business, council members approved the second reading of a resolution recommending the updated natural resources element of the comprehensive plan.
In new business, Fire Chief and Assistant to the Mayor Jimmy Coker said the town passed the sanitary survey from DHEC and need to find grants to paint the water tower on Main Street.
As a result of the survey, Coker said it was suggested the town connect with another town just in case something happens to their water supply, naming such possibilities as the towns of Coward and Barrineau.
“It’s strongly recommended suggestions,” Coker said explaining citizens will not run out of water.
Coker said there are no major problems to report at this time in the sewer department and said summer is approaching and they have begun to cut grass and trim trees.
Police Chief Mark Strickland said they will conduct road checks throughout May and June.
In the beautification report, council member Dickie Kirby said on May 13, the centennial committee will meet and the bake sale took place on May 10.
On May 13, Kirby said the town can see where they stand financially and encouraged everyone interested in the cenntinnal to attend the meeting.
Sims invited everyone to attend the groundbreaking of the new library on on May 23 at 11 a.m.
The next Olanta town council meeting will be June 3 at 6:30 p.m.in Olanta Municipal Services Building.
