Salon as zoning exception requires ordinance

»  Comments | Post a Comment

FLORENCE — For a local businessman to get permission to place a salon at 425 S. Cashua Drive, the process isn’t as simple as requesting a zoning use variance from the county board of zoning appeals.

Florence City Council members on Monday denied a rezoning request by Hieu T. Nguyen and encouraged the applicant to approach the board for an exemption to allow a salon on the property as presently zoned.

The council, however, would have to pass an ordinance for the salon to be allowed as an exception to the zoning, Florence Urban Planning and Development Director Phillip Lookadoo said. Nguyen could then apply for a special exception for the salon.

Because of the timing, the city’s board of zoning appeals, which will form July 1, would be responsible for handling the issue, Lookadoo said.
