Local businesses look back over race week

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It’s been four days since race car drivers took their final laps in the Dodge Challenger 500 at the Darlington Raceway.

Now, some local business owners are taking a look back at their sales and profits during race week.

George Nikolakakos owns Takis Family Diner in Darlington. The diner is only about a mile and a half from the track and Nikolakakos said typically lots of race fans stop in for meals.

Nikolakakos said this year, however, there was about 25% less business than normal.

“A lot of people complain about the gas prices and having them so high and a lot of people cook, they camp out, they cook their own food there a lot trying to save a little bit of money,” said Nikolakakos.

Nikolakakos said he’s hoping next year is better.

Some hotels in the area reported sales were good during this year’s race.
