An early morning accident in Marion County claimed the life of a 9 year-old child and injured four others. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol's website, the incident happened near the Marion-Dillon County line around 7:15 a.m. on SC 41 A and Highway 917 near Smithboro.
Trooper Sonny Collins says authorities charged the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet car traveling on SC 41-A after he failed to yield the right of way to a tractor-trailer traveling on Highway 917.
One person was airlifted to a hospital in Wilmington, N.C. and three others were transported to a hospital in Marion. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson confirmed to News 13 that at least one person died at the scene, but could not release the name until the victim's family had been notified.
The SC Highway patrol's M.A.I.T. team is also investigating this crash.
