There were more than a few candidates that turned out throughout the weekend to file for candidacy in the upcoming municipal elections. County elections and voter registration offices were open in Chesterfield, Darlington and Marion Counties on Sunday afternoon. Throughout the Pee Dee, people filed with their associated political parties.
Former Florence County Tax Assessor Leval Williams filed to run as Democrat for Florence County treasurer, according to Florence County Democratic Chairman Spencer Scott.
Incumbent Dean Fowler, a Republican, has filed to run for a third term.
Williams on March 14 was fired after serving 30 years with the county. County documents state he was fired after directing a contractor to change the dates on 360 property tax notices, which removed late penalties from the notices.
Williams could not be reached for comment by press time.
Documents from Williams’ personnel file, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by the Morning News, also show Williams had been suspended from Feb. 29 until the day before his termination.
Williams, who had served as tax assessor since March 1999, said last week that he has filed a grievance with the county, but would give no further comments on his termination.
Hoyt Campbell, director of Darlington County Election and Voter Registration, said that although candidates were filing with their affiliated parties throughout the Pee Dee, all the candidates in his county filed at the voter registration office.
Filing deadline was noon Sunday. The county Democratic chairpersons in Marlboro and Williamsburg counties couldn’t be reached by press time for comment on candidacy filings.
