Florence County Democrats select delegates to state convention

FLORENCE — The Florence County Democratic Party has chosen its officers and selected 46 delegates and 46 alternates to send to the state Democratic convention.

A great deal of interest has been sparked “even down to the precinct” as Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama vie for enough delegates to win the nomination, said Spencer Scott, who was elected Thursday to a second term as the county party’s chairman.

Many new faces showed up at the county party’s convention held Thursday, Scott said.

“I think that’s a tribute to our having the most diverse candidates” in the election, he said.

The county party officials also are elected in a way that ensures diversity, Scott said.

Ronnie Reynolds was elected as first vice chairman, who must be of a different race than the chairman.

Aundreta Conners was re-elected as second vice chairwoman, who must be the opposite gender of the chairman.

Michael Miller, a 25-year-old attorney, was selected as third vice chairman, who must be 30 or younger.

The Rev. Sammy Generette and Carrington Wingard were selected Thursday as county executive committee persons who will represent the county Democratic Party in Columbia throughout the year, Scott said. Jack Eckenstein and Debbie Miller are the alternates for the executive committee positions.

All officers serve two-year terms.

The delegates and alternates, half of which are male and half of which are female, will represent the county at the S.C. State Democratic Convention on May 3. The state convention will determine who represents South Carolina at the Democratic National Convention, to take place in Denver in August.

The Florence area also has a superdelegate in Marva Smalls, a vice president with the TV network Nickelodeon, who has endorsed Clinton. Superdelegates include party officials, such as Smalls, and elected officials who are free to vote for any candidate for the nomination.

The county Democratic convention’s keynote speaker was Rick Wade, a Lancaster native who has served as former Lt. Gov. Nick Theodore’s chief of staff and was the 2002 Democratic nominee for South Carolina secretary of state. He now serves as a national senior adviser to Obama.
