DARLINGTON — The S.C. State Museum Foundation members got a boost before their meeting Thursday at the Darlington Raceway: a ride around the fabled track in the pace car.
Adrienne Huffman is the foundation’s executive director. She said the board is meeting at different locations around the state so that people will be more aware of the state museum, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
But what about the cruise around the track for the Columbia native and 1994 journalism graduate of the University of South Carolina?
“It sure felt like you were going a lot faster than 70 mph,” she said after stepping out of the Dodge Challenger. “I don’t think you can appreciate the banks just by looking at them. It was almost like we were going to fall over sideways. But it was a lot of fun.”
Dr. Hunter Stokes of Florence represents the 6th Congressional District on the State Museum Commission.
“This is an extra special event to have the board meet here in the president’s box at the Darlington Raceway,” he said. “It’s especially nice for the board members from other parts of the state who have never been here before.”
The foundation recognized Dr. Bill Cain of Columbia for serving two consecutive three-year terms. The Darlington native is rotating off the board.
Other Pee Dee members are Marsha Dargan, Jim Ramsey, Lola Early and Claire McGee.
