Right now, it looks like the Florence area is on an economic roll, as new industry announcements just keep flowing from Florence County.
Tough economic times don't seem to stop the announcements of new industry, and new jobs coming to Florence County. It's almost as if the stars are aligned in this Pee Dee County's favor.
What is it that makes Florence County the location so many companies are choosing?
Jeff McKay, Executive Director of the North Eastern Strategic Aliiance (NESA) said, "It's not the one single thing that make them stand out and be competitive, it's the complete package." He says that package has several key elements:
* Focus- on creating a strong business climate
* Economic Developers- who recruit and take care of the businesses once they're here
* Legislative Leadership- that McKay says comes from Senator Hugh Leatherman and the legislative delegation
* Quality of Life
* Transportation system- with interstates, ports, rail and air
* Quality Labor Force
McKay added, "That's what companies are looking for. Lots of communities have bits and pieces of what they need to be successful in a community, but if you look at Florence County I believe they've truly pulled the complete package together, and they're doing a tremendous job in promoting that package right now.
How big of a factor is the Senator Hugh Leatherman factor? Mckay's said, "I think it's a great advantage to Florence County, particularly in the seniority that he holds, but also the position that he holds in the state." " It's critical when you're trying to put yourself in a position to tell these corporate citizens that we are the place they should consider in competing for their business."
Mckay said that he and NESA take no credit for today's announcement. He gives all of the credit to Florence County. He added that it's NESA's job to now take that message globally. Mckay predicts other counties in the NESA region will make announcements about job growth, in the coming months, even in these difficult economic times.
