»  Comments | Post a Comment

Lowcountry author Mary Alice Monroe will be the featured speaker at the First Book-Horry County's Summer Author's Luncheon on July 19 from noon-2 p.m., in Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy at Coastal Grande Mall. The fundraising lunch will help First Book of Horry County to buy new books for children in low income households.

Tickets for the benefit lunch are $15 each and can be purchased from local board members, at Abuelo's or at the door. Each individual luncheon ticket will allow First Book to provide two new books for a child. Monroe is the New York Times bestselling writer of nine novels, including her latest release, "Time is a River," which is coming out this summer and has been selected as a USA Today Summer 2008 Pick, as well as a Booksense July Pick. Booksense is the national organization of independent booksellers,

"Time is a River" is the story of Mia, a woman who flees to the North Carolina mountains to recover from breast cancer and her husband's infidelity. While staying in a friend's family fishing cabin, she becomes interested in solving the mystery of her friend's grandmother, an infamous woman whose life fell into ruins alter being accused of murdering her lover. Monroe lives on the Isle of Palms with her family. She works with several environmental groups including the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey and the Island Turtle Team and is on the board of the South Carolina Aquarium. Her work with these groups inspires her novels.

Seating begins at noon and lunch will be served shortly thereafter. The author will speak around 1 p.m. and will sign books, which will be available for purchase following the remarks. The First Book organization has a single mission: to give children from low income homes the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Formed in 1998, the Local Advisory Board has awarded more than 37,000 new books to over 21 different organizations throughout Horry County.

In early 2007 grants were awarded to Amelia Buck Tutorial Ministry (Chesterfield MBC), Grand Strand Boys and Girls Club and Midlands Elementary. Recently, grants were awarded to Horry County Schools Family Learning Center program ($1,200 for 480 new books), to Early Intervention Coastal Mentors program ($4,125 for 1,650 new books) and to Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club ($4,875 for 1,950 new books).
