Rain showers didn’t dampen the South Carolina Farmer’s Festival in Lake City this past weekend as the event attracted a huge crowd.
According to National Bean Market Museum of South Carolina Director Briley Altman, more than 1,200 people attended this year’s festival.
The weekend began with performances by the Blue Birds, a blue grass gospel group and folk rock Hercules Farms at the National Bean Market Museum of South Carolina.
On Saturday, festivities began with a parade down Main Street drawing a huge crowd to the street at 10 a.m with South Carolina Department of Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers as the parade marshall.
Children and adults dashed out into the streets to get candy from parade participants, as well as taking pictures of parade attractions.
There was singing in the Town Square, quilting demonstrations, antique tractor show and demonstrators and re-enactors on site.
Albert Johnson from Uncle Albert’s Barbecue in Darlington sauce said this is his first year participating in the festival, but has attended similar events throughout South Carolina.
Johnson said he sold about 40 quarts of his barbecue sauce by noon and has been making it for about 40 years.
Johnson said his barbecue sauce has been on the market for about five years.
“My barbecue sauce is perfect,” Johnson said explaining it’s not too hot and not too spicy. “I sell it just as fast as I can make it.”
Ann Segars of McLeod Farms Inc. said this is the first year they participated in the festival and sold a variety of fruits.
“We seemed to have done really good today,” Segars said.
Butch Chastain of Flying Farmer Grits & Meal of Summerville said he usually goes to the Farmer’s Market in Summerville but decided to come to Lake City this year.
“I have been having a lot of fun,” Chastain said as he sat back in a lawn chair with a straw hat on.
Now that the festival is over, you can still participate in the Farmer’s Market which will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. through the fall and it cost $5 for a farmer to set up and sell.
