CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ As we move deeper into hurricane season, one South Carolina county is urging its residents to register their cell phones and unlisted numbers to receive emergency alerts.
Residents in Charleston County will be able to receive notice of hurricane evacuations as well as information about chemical spills or other emergencies.
They can register their phones at an online site or at three locations in the county.
County Emergency Preparedness Director Cathy Haynes said the county can already dial any landline phone with a listed number in an emergency. The new system will add cell phones.
Notifications can be sent to areas as small as a neighborhood or to the entire county.
