James Witherspoon of Mullins is running unopposed for the vacant City Council District 6 seat. The seat was recently vacated when Burns Shelley stepped down for health reasons from the position. He says he plans to bring change to the people of Mullins through new ideas and innovation. Witherspoon, a 27-year resident of Mullins, says he be-lieves the most important thing for the community in a step to the future is to make needed improvements for the recreation center, sewage system and the city’s public school system.
“I was a member of the appeals board for over five years, I am currently on the fines commission of the city for the past year,” he said. “I am familiar with city government, so I feel that I am extremely qualified to be elected.” Some of the other changes that Witherspoon would encourage would be an improved waste-management system, clean empty lots, and possibly fill some of the ditches that are unnecessary within the sixth district of Mullins.
“If we can manage to get a grant from the government, I would highly recommend that some of these ditches be filled,” he said. Witherspoon has been the chairman of the Deacon Board for St. Paul Baptist Church in Mullins.
Elections for the position will be on Tuesday, July 15. Deadline for write-in candidates to submit their information to election officials was June 13. According to the Elections Commission office, no candidate filed to be a write-in candidate in the election.
