Three local runoff elections are scheduled for Tuesday in the Pee Dee.
Darlington County Police Capt. Wayne Byrd and Darlington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tom Gainey will face each other in a runoff election for the office of Darlington County sheriff.
Byrd had 3,477 votes, while Gainey trailed with 2,706 votes in June 10’s primary election.
Byrd, 42, was the first candidate to announce he would run for sheriff. He began his law enforcement career in his hometown of Society Hill in 1987 and has been with the Darlington Police Department since 1989.
Gainey, 55, who has been chief deputy since 1996, announced he would run for the position in January. He began his law enforcement career in 1975 at the Florence Police Department, where he worked for two years. He also worked at Hartsville Police Department for six years.
Voters in Marion County Council District 2 will choose between incumbent Eloise Rogers and Cynthia Legette to represent them. Rogers received 607 votes to Legette’s 564 on June 10.
Voters in Williamsburg County Council District 3 will choose between incumbent Harry Darby, who received 376 votes in the June 10 primary, and Murrie Buford, who got 334 votes.
No Republican candidates have filed to run for these three offices, so it’s expected the candidates who win Tuesday’s runoffs will be elected in November’s general election.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Those who voted in the Republican primary June 10 are ineligible to vote in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoffs.
Those who did not vote in either of the primaries June 10, however, are eligible to participate in the runoff elections.
