Hartsville, the art of good living

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Byerly Foundation Executive Director Richard Puffer explained the “Selling Hartsville” initiative to city staff Tuesday night.

“Selling Hartsville” is a plan to market and promote Hartsville’s assets to increase membership into the community, increase the tax base and ensure the continued growth of the city.

The foundation has launched a marketing plan with a new slogan for the Greater Hartsville area.

Hartsville, the Art of Good Living.

In a brief presented to city staff members Tuesday, Puffer said the “Selling Hartsville” initiative stemmed partly from the fact that Hartsville is losing a large number of potential residents to Florence.

These potential residents are employees of Sonoco, Coker College, Progress Energy and Carolina Pines, among others.

These residents typically have above-average salaries and don’t even consider living in Hartsville, the brief said.

“It is apparent that if we want our community to remain strong, vibrant and vital,” the brief stated, “we have to address this issue.”

Puffer believes the community must open themselves more to hosting these potential neighbors. He suggested inviting these new members of the community to get involved in the rich culture and community life of Hartsville while they are in the process of deciding what city to call home.

If the city had ambassadors to host and escort these potential residents about the city, Puffer said he feels certain they would appreciate the beauty of the city.

The Byerly Foundation hired Carolina Marketing and Public Relations, a Charlotte firm with ties to South Carolina, to assess ways to market Hartsville.

The firm’s conclusion was, “Hartsville has a lifestyle that many people are looking for around the country.”

The brief also said that Hartsville should not keep this lifestyle a secret.

Hartsville has a wealth of services, history and remarkable citizens, and “Selling Hartsville” is in the process of letting new and potential residents see the beauty of the community and demonstrate the art of good living.
