An ordinance that would fund the construction of a new station for the Olanta Rural Fire Department received second reading today from Florence County Council.

The fire department is currently operating out of a small, older station on Main Street.

The new station would be located on Olanta Highway, right beside the Florence County EMS building.

Officials say the new station is needed for several reasons, including space.

Right now, three fire trucks have to sit outside because all the space inside is occupied by other equipment.

“Things have changed. We’ve grown. We’ve received some grants, some assistance from other sources and at this time now we have really excellent equipment for the community to serve them,” said Chief Jimmy Coker.

County officials estimate a 1.5-mill tax increase would be implemented if the ordinance passes.

There could be some good news, though, for local residents.

Officials are also hoping that the new station will improve the department’s ISO rating.

If that happens, residents could see lower fire insurance costs.
