Burry, Hupfer graduate from Furman University

Caye Burry and Elizabeth Hupfer, both of Hartsville, are members of Furman University’s Class of 2008.

During the graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 31, Burry and Hupfer heard from commencement speaker President George W. Bush.

Burry is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Burry of Hartsville, and Hupfer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hupfer of Hartsville.

Hartsville business executive honored

Terry D. Gerhardt, a resident of Hartsville, and vice president at Sonoco Products Company in Hartsville, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The fellow grade is the highest elected grade of membership in the ASME. Fellowship is conferred upon a member with at least ten years of active engineering practice and who has made significant contributions to the profession.

The staff vice president of technology at Sonoco, Gerhardt leads industrial research programs in solid mechanics and related technologies. Before joining Sonoco in 1985, he worked at Forest Products Lab, where he developed design methodologies for pallets and other wood-based products.

Terry Gerhardt attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics in 1979.

AMSE is a not-for-profit professional organization promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences. ASME develops codes and standards that enhance public safety and provides lifelong learning and technical exchange opportunities benefiting the engineering and technology community.

Master Gardener Course to begin in July

Kalmia Gardens of Coker College in cooperation with the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service is taking applications for the Darlington County Master Gardener Class of 2008.

The program is an intensive 40-hour horticulture course that will be held in the Joslin Education Center at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville.

Classes will be held Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. July 15 through Sept. 30. The fee, which covers printed material and other class expenses, is $150 per person.

Those accepted for the course agree to volunteer 40 hours of service. For an application or additional information, please contact Kalmia Gardens of Coker College at 383-8145 or e-mail dhill@coker.edu.

Hartsville’s Drayton named officer to Land Trust

Hartsville native Eddie Drayton was acknowledged for his recent selection as vice-chairman of the Pee Dee Land Trust on Sunday, June16.
The trust celebrated the opening of its inaugural “Pieces from the Pee Dee” exhibit at the Florence Museum of Art, Science and History.
The grand opening was held in conjunction with the Land Trust’s annual summer membership gathering.
Drayton represents Darlington County among the Land Trust’s officers.
The Pee Dee Land Trust’s mission is to protect the significant natural, agricultural and historical resources that define the Pee Dee region.
Landowners make the greatest ambassadors. Many, after granting conservation easements to the Land Trust, go on to educate their neighbors about the benefits of protecting land.
The Land Trust currently protects approximately 1,500 acres in Darlington County.
