The Mullins City Council added a new face to council when newly-elected member Terry Davis was sworn in this past week. Supporters came out by the dozens, as her pastor, the Rev. Jeremy Bethea swore in the District 3 council member. Excited and saying she is ready for the challenges, Davis said she is prepared to discover what is ahead in the city’s future.

“That made me feel good to know I had this kind of support from my neighborhood. It’s an honor to be back here and do whatever I can to make changes ... I’m glad to work here for them,” she said. Making the moment more special was having her son Terrence M. Scott and uncle George Milton Davis witnessing the moment, she said.

Council members also said goodbye to City Administrator George Hardwick, present at his final meeting before his July 1 retirement. Hardwick said his concern for his city never lets up, and he encouraged city officials to never get satisfied with where they are and to always strive to get better.

He said he was pleased with the current situation and with the restructuring that has given employees added responsibilities. “We have a good team in place. I feel the city has good quality people, and I’m going home without worry,” he said. “The city has always been fortunate to work as a team,” he said, urging them to keep up the good work, and adding that they all have always shared a good working relationship with no problems between council members. Joined by his wife, Alice, and daughter, Mary Elizabeth, it was Hardwick’s final City Council meeting, since being sworn in on June 9, 1988.

Incoming City Administrator Pete Rogers said he’s enjoyed working with Hardwick and is thankful for his willingness to keep him informed in adjusting to his new position.

In other business, council members approved the final reading of an ordinance to raise revenue, and adopt a budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Smith Brooks of Kenneth Cobb and Company presented the audit report for the 2007-08 fiscal year. Brooks highlighted that the city’s undesignated fund balance was near $700,000, giving the city 70 days of operating funds.

Additionally, by way of a press release, it was announced that Mullins has once again been named a Tree City USA. Mullins has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry.

It is the 13th year Mullins has received the national recognition. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest service. Mullins has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: have a tree board, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and a Arbor Day observance.
