Some say they weren't allowed to vote in city primary

It’s been one week since citizens in Florence headed to the polls for the primary elections.

But now, some are saying they weren’t allowed to vote in the city primaries, like the mayor’s race, despite the fact that they live in the city limits.

One of those voters is Bill Travis.

Travis says he lives in the Florence city limits.

Last Tuesday, though, Travis says he was only allowed to vote for the state races.

News 13 confirmed with the Florence County Voter Registration and Elections Commission that Travis does indeed live in the city limits.

Officials say Travis wasn't given a ballot, however, because the voter registration list had not been updated to reflect the annexation of the street where he lives.

“The 911 people in Florence are responsible for sending all that to us and if we don’t get it and don’t get it updated, the books will show a Code 99 under city council which means they’re outside the city limits and not allowed to vote in the city,” said Steve Love, the acting director of the Florence County Voter Registration and Elections Commission.

An official recount of the mayor’s race on Monday left challenger Stephen Wukela one vote ahead of incumbent Frank Willis.

Willis told News 13 on Monday he planned to file an amended protest to the one filed on Friday.

In that document, Willis claims numerous registered voters were denied the right to vote in the city election.
