Ida Mae Blue
Ida Mae Blue, born on June 9, 1918, to Lawrence and Pearlie Mae Bethea, died on Sunday June 15, 2008 in Sunny Acres Nursing Facilities. Before joining New Bethel Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Blue attended St. Stephens United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher. At New Bethel she served as Sunday School Superintendent, succeeding her husband Daniel Warren Blue Sr., as Sunday School Teacher, Nurse’s Aide, Church Elder and member of the Usher’s Board. She was a loyal volunteer at the Council on Aging, where she read poems to the “old people.”
Mrs. Blue was predeceased by her parents, her husband, daughter, Norma Faye Blue Whitfield, and a son, James L. Blue. Survivors include five sons, Dr. Daniel W. (Susan) Blue Jr. of Mullins, Victor (Gail) Blue, Ronald F. Blue and Terry Blue of Dillon, and the Rev. William F. (Lucinda) Blue of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral for Mrs. Blue will be on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. in New Bethel Presbyterian Church, Dillon. A wake will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Bartell’s Funeral Chapel, 1309 East Calhoun Street.

Letha E. Crawford
Letha Edwards Crawford, 84, widow of James Vance Crawford, died Tuesday, June 10, in McLeod Hospice House following an illness. Services were Friday, June 13, at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols. Mrs. Crawford was born May 3, 1924 in Horry County, a daughter of the late William Edwards and the late Minnie Richardson Edwards. She was a graduate of the Mullins Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her LPN degree. She was also an active homemaker and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Crawford are two sons, James Vance Crawford Jr. of Lincolnton, N.C., and Wilbur P. Price of Hopewell, Va.; two brothers, Stacey Edwards of Conway, Lide Edwards of Little River; four sisters, Juanita Norris of Currie, N.C., Helen Barfield of Mullins, Jane Causey of Mullins, Hazel McKenzie of Mullins; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Crawford was predeceased by two brothers, Bill Edwards and Earl Edwards, and a sister, Maggie Cook.

Joseph Howard Hammond
Joseph Howard Hammond, 87, of Nichols died Wednesday, June 11, 2008 in Carolina’s Hospital after an illness. Mr. Hammond was born in Horry County, a son of the late Guthrie Berry and Grace Watson Hammond. Mr. Hammond graduated from Floyds High School and was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired farmer, a lifetime member of the Causey Hunting club, a member of the American Legion, and a member of the Spring Branch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Watson Hammond, and one sister, Bernice H. Ludlum. Surviving him are his wife of more than 60 years, Virginia Elliott Hammond of the home; sons, Garrie Hammond of Boone, N.C., Tim (Deborah) Hammond of Florence, and one daughter, Joyce (Ronald) Fogle of Nichols.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Bobby Bullard and Brad (Sierra) Bullard of Nichols, Scott Hammond of Atlanta, Bob (Abby) Hammond of Nashville, Dewayne Hammond of Lexington, Joey (Pansy) Hammond of Aynor, Rebecca (Billy) Reid of Irmo, and Rachel Hammond of Sumter and seven great-grandchildren. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008, in the Spring Branch Baptist Church, Nichols, with burial in the Church cemetery.

Charles Larry Reach
Charles Larry Reach, 56, died Monday, June 9, 2008 in Bradford Gardens, Marion after an illness. Services were at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 14, in Unity Christ Church, Myrtle Beach, officiated by the Rev. Margaret Hiller. Richardson Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mr. Reach was born in Birmingham, Ala., a son of Charles Luther Reach Jr. and Eva Carol Bazemore Reach. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and worked as a building contractor. Mr. Reach was a member of Unity Christ Church of Myrtle Beach.
Surviving is a brother, Steven Allen Reach of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters, Judith Reach Dodd of Kennesaw, Ga., Nancy Carol Reach of Hermitage, Tenn., and Rebecca Jean Reach of Old Hickory, Tenn.

Earl B. Rasberry
Earl B. Rasberry, 82, died Thursday, June 5, 2008. Mr. Rasberry was born April 10, 1927 in Scotland County, N.C., and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of his life. He retired from Biltmore Dairy after serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Rasberry attended Cedar Hill Baptist Church and was the son of the late James and Emma Spears Rasberry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Rasberry; one sister and five brothers. Surviving are his children, Pat Martin of Galivants Ferry, Curtis Rasberry and Dennis Rasberry, both of Mullins, Ricky Rasberry of Elkhart, Ind., Vickie Baldwin of Weaverville, N.C., and Dale Flynn of Marshall, N.C.; sisters, Juanita Appolo, Barbara Nacarrato of St. Louis, Mo. and Velma Tennyson of Florence; brothers, Malcolm Rasberry of Florence, Frank Rasberry of Mullins and Jerry Rasberry of Murrells Inlet; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday June 7, in the chapel of West Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thom Murphy officiating. Burial was in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to VFW Post # 891, 626 New Leicester Hwy., Asheville, N.C. 28806.

Betty Anne Smith Griffin
Betty Anne Griffin, 82, widow of the Dr. W.R. “Bob” Griffin, died Sunday, June 8, 2008 in Conway Manor. Mrs. Griffin was born in Augusta, Ga., a daughter of the late Charles Uldrick and Ruth Stafford Smith. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon and taught high school English until her marriage in 1948. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Conway, where she taught Sunday school and was an Altar Guild Member. Mrs. Griffin was active in Scouting and supported her children in all their activities. She was an active member of the Conway Hospital Medical Auxiliary.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Anne (Cyrus T.) Sloan of Marion, Mary Charles (William H.) Conner of Rome, Ga.; a son, W. Robert Griffin Jr. of Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren, Anne Conley Sloan, Sarah Sloan (Austin) Jowers, Gabbe Best, Kyzer Smith Griffin, Stephen Bishop (Beverly) Conner, Charles Griffin Conner; one great-grandson, Andrew Bishop Conner; two sisters, Ruth Smith Durant of Dublin, Ga., Kathleen Smith Hill of Atlanta and several nieces.
Services were at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, from First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mac Kinnett officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Leon Gerald
Leon Gerald, 77, died on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. Services for Mr. Gerald were on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 2 p.m. in Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Marion. The Rev. A.C. Robinson is Pastor and the Rev. Marvin Kelty was eulogist. Burial followed in Devotion Gardens. Mr. Gerald was born June 30, 1930, as the fourth of 14 children. His parents were the late Rev. Arthur and Gertrude Johnson Gerald of Centenary. Leon graduated from Marion County Public School and was a life-long member of Centerville Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years, defending his country in the Korean conflict. He graduated from Benedict College with a B.S. degree in mathematics and science and was a math and science teacher in the state public school system. He was a member of the National Education Association and the S.C. Education Association. He earned an M.S. in mathematics from South Carolina Sate University while employed as a teacher at Mullins High School.
Mr. Gerald was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ham and a brother, Isaac Gerald. His survivors, in addition to his wife Nancy P. Gerald are five children from his former marriage to Delaware McNeil, Del Resia Gerald Brand (Terry) of Irmo, Steven L. Gerald and Wanda Gerald Kiah (Michael) of Atlanta, Ga., Leonora Gerald Brock of Charlotte, N.C. , and Miss Sheri Gerald of Marion; three step-sons, Andre Phillips and Tyrone Paige of Gresham, and Jerrod Paige of California; two grandchildren, Tiffany Jane Bran and Anthony Steven Brock; seven step-grandchildren; sisters, Martha Shannon of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ruth Weeks (Freddie) of Marion, Eleanor Ann Davis (Jerome) of Florence, Lillian Milford (Carnell), Pernella Donkor, and Rosa Lee Pender all of Marion, Alexenna Alexis (Yvon) and Theresa Francis both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers, James Gerald (Barbara) of Fayetteville, Ata Shabazz (Miniimah) of Winnsboro and MacMillian Gerald (Kathy) of Brooklyn; one aunt, Eda Furness (C.L.)of Brooklyn; one uncle, Robert C. Gerald of Society Hill; one sister-in-law, Alga Ford Gerald, two brothers-in-law, Roger Phillips, and Franklin (Janet) Phillips, both from New Jersey; a paternal daughter, Tracey Foxworth, along with a host of nieces and nephews, friends, extended family members and Ellison Alford, longtime friend of Mullins.

Clara Bell Cross Williams
Services for Clara Bell Cross-Williams,75, were on Monday June 9, 2008 at 2 p.m., from the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Marion. The Rev. A.C. Robinson, pastor, was eulogist. Burial followed in the church cemetery in Marion. Mrs. Williams, daughter of the late Rev. Oscar and Annie Mae Williams Cross Sr., and the step-daughter of the late Sarah Williams Cross, was born on Aug. 29, 1932 in the Rains Community of Marion County. She died on June 5, 2008 in McLeod Regional Medical Cnter, Florence, after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Woodberry, Edward Cross and Major Cross Sr.; two sisters, Baby Girl Annie Mae Cross and Mary Alice Cross (Mackie) Cribb.
She was educated in the public schools of Marion County. She was a former employee of Mullins Leaf Tobacco Company, SoPak-Co, Marion Memorial Hospital and with Marion School District 1. She retired from AVM Inc. after many years as an industrial worker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ushers and Missionary Ministries, loved singing and was a member of the Supreme Travelers. She married to Jim McFadden Williams for 55 years and the couple had two sons.
Her survivrs include her loving husband; two sons, Cleve (Betty) Williams of Marion and Fonnie Williams and Pun Zawatski of Mullins; five grandchildren, Letita (Lawrence) Jennings of Charleston, Cameron (Tonya) Williams of Darlington, Tasha Anderson of Birmingham, Ala., Toni Williams and Phillip Williams both of Marion; five great-grandchildren, five foster chidlren that she raised as her own; Chris Phillips of Norfolk Va., Morgan Thompson of New York, N.Y., David Lee of Florence, Garrick Buie of Mullins, Tyrone Ransome and Cedric Phillips both of Marion; three sisters, Sarah (Lacy) Gady of Birmingham, Ala., Marjorie C. Ivory and Minnie C. Mason; three brothers Willie Lee Cross, Ed (Elizabeth) Cross of Winston Salem, N.C., Oscar (Edna) Cross of Marion; one brother-in-law, Gladys (MaeCeal) Williams of Centenary; three sisters-in-law, Nancy W. Reed of Marion, Ellen Tilman of Mullins and Mary Sue Williams of Florence. Also, a special caregiver; Doris Davis of Marion; three special nieces, Evangelist Arletha F. Dennison and Sandra Cross both of Marion, Sharon Bell of Rains; two close friends, Esterlene Legette and Mable Paige both of Marion; an adopted sister, Irene Davis of Marion and many other niece, nephews, family members and friends.

Llewellyn Vincent Copp
Llewellyn Vincent Copp, 85, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Hospice House after an illness. Services were at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 16, in Richardson Funeral Home, with David Ralph officiating. Entombment followed in Palmetto Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum. Mr. Copp was born in York, Penn. in the Codorus Township, a son of the late Maurice E. Copp and Margie Irene ‘Tyson’ Copp. He was retired from Blumenthal Mills, where he was Jacquard Special Department Manager. He was also a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret B. Copp; son, Ronald Llewellyn Copp of Ridgeville; daughters, Carol Jean Trapp (Richard) of Marion, Kimberly Susan Bowden (Glen) of Myrtle Beach; brother Arthur Copp of Geneva, Ala.; sister Gloria Joseph of Spring Grove, Penn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made tot he Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, 29506.

Adrian ‘Shaneaka’ Rollins
Adrian ‘Shaneaka’ Rollins, 24, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She was born in Marion County on July 8, 1983 and was the daughter of Diane Rollins and Ernest Emanuel. A funeral was on Wenseday, June 11, 2008 at 3 p.m., in the Greater Deliverance Church for all people, with Bishop John Owens, pastor and eulogist. Burial followed in the Sunset Gardens Cemetery, Marion. She attended the public shcools of Marion County, South Carolina. Preceding her in death were her grandparents, Alice and Sammy Emanuel and Elouise and Charles Rollins. Her survivors include her only son, A’mauri Rollins of Marion; her mother and her father, two brothers, Shawn Rollins of Leesburg, Fla. and Corrie Rollins of Marion’ seven aunts, seven uncles, two nieces, one nephew, a host of cousins, and one special friend, Michelle Moody.
