A Marion man was arrested Tuesday after deputies said he forced his way into his estranged wife’s home and threatened her with a crowbar, Florence County Sheriff’s Capt. Julius Lee said.

John Ruben Mitchell, 41, of 512 John Epps St. is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first-degree burglary and violation of protective order under the protection from domestic abuse act, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. Monday when the suspect forced his way in the back door of a residence and confronted the victim with a crowbar. He left the scene when he heard that deputies were on their way, Lee said.

Mitchell remains in custody at the jail in Effingham awaiting a bond hearing before a circuit court judge.
