Horry County Senate race not a close one

An Horry County election that generated a lot of attention, and some controversy, is the race for Senate District 33.

Republican incumbent Luke Rankin faced Horry County Council Chairman Liz Gilland and attorney Howard Bond in Tuesday night’s primary.

The unofficial results from Horry County with all the precincts reporting have Howard Bond with 322 votes, Liz Gilland with 2,442, and Luke Rankin with 5,994.

Dozens of people crowded inside the Horry County election headquarters at the Government and Justice Center waiting for the results to come in precinct by precinct.

And as the numbers came in, Luke Rankin had a strong, early lead ahead of Gilland and Bond.

Gilland sat in the middle of the room and had her eyes on the screen the whole night.

She said she started the day not knowing what to expect.

"I did not have any idea when I walked in tonight if I was going to beat him to a pulp or he beat me to a pulp or whether we back and forth and I guess I was a little surprised because I’ve never been so completely shellacked, but I was and it was o.k., just numbers on the wall."

Rankin said he is humbled by his primary win and he plans to go back to Columbia and continue his work on behalf of the people of Horry County, but not before he gets a good night’s sleep.

But Rankin is not done campaigning yet, he has a Democratic opponent in November, Jara Uzenda.
