FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina teen accused of plotting to blow up his high school is expected in federal court for arraignment on explosives charges. The hearing is set Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in Florence.
A federal grand jury indicted 18-year-old Ryan Schallenberger on charges of receiving an explosive, attempting to destroy property by explosive and possessing an unregistered destructive device. Federal prosecutors last month dropped the most serious charge, attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.
The straight-A student was arrested in April after his parents picked up a package addressed to him containing 20 pounds of ammonium nitrate.
Police say they found at his home other materials to make bombs and a cassette tape he wanted played after he died in an assault he planned at Chesterfield High School.
