Members of the Marlboro County School District Board of Education have approved second reading of the district’s proposed 2008-09 budget totaling $29,976,392, which doesn’t include a millage increase.
There are no changes to the budget since its first reading, said Randall Malachi, the district’s public information officer.
A new math program with math manipulatives was chosen by the board to receive top priority on the district’s list of budget needs for the 2008-09 school year, Malachi said. Other items on the list will be determined by the administrative staff, he said.
Last year, the district adopted a new reading program to help strengthen students’ reading skills.
Other items listed in the top 10 of 34 budget needs include bus radios, technology (projectors, SmartBoards and document cameras), the Dolly Parton Imagination Library reading initiative, science lab upgrades, high school resource officers, a license for MAP software, walk-through metal detectors, staff development for teachers and a behavior program for kindergarten through fifth grade.
Salary increases for employees other than teachers haven’t been determined. The board will continue its discussion of which categories of employees will receive salary increases.
The district is required to give teachers the mandated salary increase determined by the state each year.
A public hearing and third reading of the budget is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 16 in the Marlboro County High School media center.
