COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The U.S. Justice Department says it will send federal observers to South Carolina's Williamsburg County to monitor the primary elections Tuesday.
The county's Elections Commission chief says many of the local races are competitive. Priscilla Cooper says it's been at least a decade since the Justice Department last sent observers to Williamsburg County.
In a news release, the department said agents will monitor polling places and a civil rights attorney will coordinate activities. A department spokesman declined to elaborate.
The rural county in eastern South Carolina features some of the most contested primaries for incumbent legislators. One state representative faces three Democratic challengers, and a state senator faces two.
