On days like this, it’s muggy, it’s hot, and staying around 100 degrees. So for more and more families in the Pee Dee, it’s pack on the sunscreen, grab a towel and head to a much cooler place.
"It's great, it's like having a swimming pool in your community, you bring the kids have a great time and they like sprinklers, they run right through it, so they love it,” said Kevin Yarborough of Lake City. It is one of the coolest places around, literally.
The Splash Pad at Lynches River County Park has seen on average 120 people a day. The park managers expect that number to rise with the temperature.
To get in, it’s $3 for kids and adults are free with paid child admission. If you don’t like to get wet, stay away from this place. More than 30 sprinklers are aimed in every direction. Since its completion late last summer, it’s gotten even wetter.
"It's got its benefits because you get to play with the kids and have fun yourself,” said Virginia Yarborough, who visited the Splash Pad for the first time on Sunday.
It’s now open six days a week and just might be the cure we’ve been looking for in this awful heat.
