Florence County Citizens In Action is accusing the county of improperly spending $72,630 on a new roof for the Timmonsville Boys & Girls Club, but the county says the expenditure is legal.
The money was approved unanimously by councilmen at an April 3 meeting, but Florence County Citizens In Action issued a press release Friday saying the county may have breached the line of separation of church and state because the Boys & Girls Club is housed in a building owned by Faith Life Ministries Church.
County administrator Richard Starks said the club recently signed a 20-year lease and has control over the building, located at 620 N. Brockington St.
