Rising fuel and food costs continue to hit consumers hard.
Some local gardeners say as a result, they’re thankful to grow some of what they eat.
Florence resident Sam Ervin says he’s been gardening just about his whole life.
He grows everything from cucumbers to okra to squash.
He and his wife, Ludie, say having a garden helps them save a little bit of money all year long.
That’s because even after the summer months are gone, they have food stored in the freezer.
“I enjoy being able to go to the freezer. Living in the country, we try not to go to town too often and this can save us gas because we can eat either out of the garden in the summer or the freezer in the winter to some extent,” said Ludie.
According to ConsumerAffairs.Com, a family of five spends about $135 each week on groceries. Rising gas costs and other economic concerns, however, could compel that number up even more, according to the website.
